A Little Bit About Us…

No. 21 York offers a choice of six clean & comfortable rooms, a warm and homely welcome as well as a great Yorkshire Breakfast – all within a stones throw of York City Centre. Please note we do not cater for Hen or Stag Parties or take groups of more than four (4).

Built circa 1840 the B&B is a Victorian Terrace that has a history of offering lodging accommodation to guests since 1939 when “Grandma Nobby” – aka Mrs Ella Kathleen Warneford – took in lodgers during and after the War.  It was converted into Bed and Breakfast in March 1962 when Mrs. J.P. Morcome opened her home to travellers to the city as Morcome Guest House, we will continue in this tradition of offering homely hospitality in some of the finest bed and breakfast accommodation in York.  Part of our ethos is that we support our local partners sourcing all of our produce & services – wherever possible – from within a 20 mile radius of York which includes all of the trades and materials used in the refurbishment.

Just a short stroll along Marygate Lane to the Museum Gardens & you are in the heart of York, with York Minster to your left & the City Centre directly ahead of you. A huge variety of shops, restaurants, coffee shops, bars & attractions are at your feet. The River Ouse is a two minute stroll away and offers great walks, jogging & cycling routes right outside the front door.  In addition the countryside of North Yorkshire is on your doorstep, explore the Moors, Dales & Wolds or venture a little further to discover North Yorkshire’s amazing coastline.

No. 21 York is situated in a beautiful conservation area of St.Mary’s, York and our home is a mid-terrace Victorian Townhouse which is almost two centuries old. Thankfully every effort has been taken to preserve its original character. Many of our rooms feature grand high ceilings and original cornicing – with the odd creaky floorboard too !  Due to our historic and conservation status some of our rooms are snug but have everything that you need and we do not have a lift, so if you can’t manage stairs easily please do ask us in advance for a room on a lower floor (our team are always available to help with luggage). Given our central location on a quiet cul-de-sac in the heart of York, please also note that room sizes can be smaller than you might be used to in out-of-town locations.

We offer a fully non-smoking property with en-suite shower room accommodation in all of our rooms, LED Smart TV’s with Freeview, alarm clock radios with docking station, complimentary Wi-Fi access throughout the property, tea & coffee facilities with Home-made Biscuits, Taylor’s of Harrogate Teas, Coffees and Hot Chocolate, Harrogate Spa mineral waters, hair dryers, irons & boards and free off-road parking to the rear of the building. A lock-up bike shed is also available for guests travelling by – or wishing to bring your – bike.

Breakfast is sourced locally with Bacon, Eggs, Sausages & Black Pudding all coming from Tony Neary’s Butchers on Clifton Green. Jams & Marmalades are from Bracken Hill Farm at Elvington. Our yoghurt are supplied by Longley Farm at Holmfirth, the breads are home-made & with flour from Bradshaw’s Flour Mill in Driffield, as are the pancakes. Fruits, Vegetables & Fruit Juices are sourced from Sheila’s Fruit & Veg in the Shambles Market in York and Toiletries – which are Vegan Friendly – are from H2K Skincare of Harrogate. As with the rooms our Teas are supplied by Taylor’s of Harrogate and our Milk and Cream by Dairyman of York and sourced from the Yorkshire Dales.

We are also proud to be working with the Blueberry Academy – www.blueberryacademy.co.uk – who help us with our garden & planting as well as our PAT Testing. The Blueberry Academy team provide specialist support for adults with learning difficulties, developing highly innovative curriculum and services. The Blueberry Academy are at the forefront of employability and have a proven track record in developing other organisations to introduce new practice and to raise the standards of employability training.

The images used are from our friends and fellow members of the York Camera Club – www.yorkcameraclub.co.uk – as well as a few of our own impressions of York & the surrounds. Details of the photographer will be supplied along with each image.
